Why happiness at work?

Let’s face it: we spend most of our waking hours focused on work. And that’s also fair - it is one of three main pillars of every adult’s life: work, relationships, and our own self. Let me explain.

I think every person with a job can agree that work takes up a lot of time and space in our lives. If we take the optimistic calculation of 8 hours of sleep at night and working no more than 40 hours per week, we land at spending about 36% of our waking hours at work. And that would be the best case scenario - it doesn't yet consider the commute, or the possible (and let’s be honest, not all that rare) overtimes. Or getting ready in the morning while thinking about the day ahead, or the time needed to decompress and refocus back to reality after the day is done, or the problem-solving and worrying that often run on the back burners of our minds even on our days off. In reality, it hardly ever stops at being ‘just about the third’ of our lives. Even then, the time we actively spend focused on work is only one part of the equation, though.

The next big thing is the relationships we have in our personal lives. Whether it comes to the relationship with our partners, our families, or friends, we can probably agree that it receives another major part of our time and headspace. And finally - last, but certainly not least - there’s you. You, as an individual, a person full of all that goes on within you, even when no one else is around. It is three separate pillars, but they don’t exist in isolation.

Many people focus on improving their planning and efficiency in order to save an hour here or get more done in another hour there, to reinvest the time into other things that are important to them. Work often comes not only with the energy expended, but with additional pressure or stress. A type of tiredness that goes beyond our working days and muscles and easily spills over into our relationships, and into us.

In fact, it’s not just the exhaustion that can spill over - everything we experience at work seeps into the rest of our lives, too.
